Shouts of Joy and Victory

I am so excited to have one of my sweet friends and author of two books, Jenni DeWitt share on the blog this week!  She writes with genuine honesty while sharing faith-filled hope.  I know you will be inspired and encouraged by her!

Guest Post by Jenni DeWitt

My five-year-old son recently finished a three-year cancer treatment for leukemia. Those three long years, I had dreamed about the end of treatment and how wonderful it would be.

But there’s one thing I hadn’t anticipated — the new fear that would try to creep into my mind once treatment was over.

“What if it comes back?”

Every time I’d try to celebrate, every time the joy of being finished with treatment filled my heart, a rude voice kept trying to interrupt my joy.
It whispered, “Don’t celebrate too much. You are tempting fate. Every time you announce to the world that cancer treatment is over, you increase the risk that it will come back again.”

Totally illogical. Totally bizarre. Totally evil.

But isn’t that the way the evil one works?
He whispers lies in our ear, trying to get us to believe them. It’s how man fell through Eve, and it’s how we fall in little ways every single day when we choose to believe those lies.

But I’m not going to give evil the victory. I’m not going to let those whispers rob me of joy and plunge me into a sea of my own fear.

Because if there is one thing I’ve learned through this journey, it’s that you celebrate the good days. You cling to the joy, and you praise Jesus for it.
We don’t know what tomorrow will bring. None of us do. But we are free to live in the joy of today.

Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: “The Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!”(Psalm 118:15)

  1. I’m SO happy to hear that Jenni’s son has completed his leukemia treatments – she is such an awesome person!

Thank you for joining us at Inspire Me Monday Danise – I wish you a week filled with blessing and joy! :-)

    1. Yes, it’s been very hard. I always had so much anxiety about my children’s health. Then Cooper was diagnosed, and I found out that God would be with me through it all. It’s helped me live with less fear and more trust.

  2. Have led my life fighting those negative thoughts. I have learned that it’s not so much in your head but in the constant negative expression of others that these thoughts creep in.

    1. Perla,

I think I can see what you are saying. When we are around people who do not choose joy, it can make it more difficult to choose joy ourselves. Praying you are surrounded by joy in your life, Perla.

  3. As believers we are to live in the moment and trust Him moment by moment. In the happy, sad and in-between times we are to trust and have faith in His plans. Hard to do at times, but that is what helps me get through the trials life gives us. Great reminder here!

  4. Lovely to see you here Jenni. As hard as this journey with your son must be, it is beautiful to see the ways that God is using it to speak to many. Thank you for this costly offering.

  5. Yay, Jenni so glad to see you here and so glad for those shouts of victory. I know that feeling of wondering if every sniffle will land us back in the hospital or start the cycle all over again. So glad that trust engages one moment at a time, one day, one week, then year upon year He proves His faithfulness to be there through everything. Thanks for sharing your heart with us! #testimonytuesday

  6. Oh yes, I KNOW those whispers, that try to keep me from celebrating. I love your resolve…I’m not going to let evil have the victory…to keep me from celebrating or joy. Thanks so much for sharing this at #RaRaLInkup today!

  7. Hurrah! Jenni! Especially this… “Because if there is one thing I’ve learned through this journey, it’s that you celebrate the good days. You cling to the joy, and you praise Jesus for it.” I am praising God today for total healing for your Son. Have a wonderful holiday weekend.

  8. “We are free to live in the joy of today.” Love that. So often we want to be bound by the fear, rather than embracing the joy.

Prayers for your son,Jenni. I can’t imagine the strength and courage that takes for a mom, for a family…for a little boy. May God bless you all. ((Hug))

Thank you for sharing this lovely post, Danise.
Visiting you today from the Coffee for Your Heart Linkup.
    ~ Best to you ~

  9. I know the fear you speak about. My husband had cancer 13 years ago and I still have to fight the evil whispers of the enemy every time he gets ill. Thank you for sharing.

    Blessings ~ Christy

  10. Jenni, what an inspiration you and your family are. I feel so convicted about the little things I allow to steal my joy. Thank you for the gentle encouragement to find the joy that exist in every day. It is truly a choice. Be blessed! – Kia

  11. “Celebrate the good days!” YES! Give God the glory! Praying Him with you for the end of your son’s treatments. Thank you for sharing your story and encouraging me! So glad I clicked over from Susan’s link up!
